Who is Twig?

Twig is a potter based in Portland, OR. He completed his formal art education at Lewis & Clark College in 2017, graduating with a minor in Art & Art History. He began his studies with coursework in oil painting but soon pivoted to ceramics after being taken by the grounded, material aspect of clay and functional wares.

Influenced by his foundation as a painter “discovering” scenes by layering paint, Twig found that clay necessitated a similar process of revealing and refining form. His attention to detail leads him to search for precise and challenging forms, accentuating their contours and contrasting raw earth with blocks of color and texture.

His current work is informed by sleek contemporary design aesthetics with influence from the angular yet organic forms of Jomon pottery. He is currently exploring ways to create spontaneous, textural, and dimensional surfaces to contrast his precise forms through the incorporation of locally-foraged raw materials and atmospheric firing.

Twig seeks to elevate everyday functional objects to something unique, unexpected, and at times other-worldly — he hopes there is a little space for “Twiggy World” in your heart and imagination as well!
